This is the Homepage of Cooley Environmental and Health Group which was founded in 1994 as an action group to oppose Sellafield and get it shut down. In the intervening years the Group has become more research orientated and has developed links with Dr Dennis Pringle in the Department of Geography in NUI Maynooth. Besides cancer other issues which the Group has touched on are Safety, Energy, Waste Disposal and Personal Energy. The Group has held Workshops in the month of January in the years 2001, 2002, and 2003. A Workshop was held on 31 January 2004 on the theme "Fabrication, Machinery, Dundalk and the Environment." A winter workshop was held on the afternoon of Saturday 29 January 2005 on the theme "Organisation and Health", a sixth winter workshop was held on the afternoon of 28 January 2006 on the theme "Isolation."
The 2007 workshop was the seventh workshop in the series and it had the theme of "urban sprawl!"
The eighth winter workshop (2008) addressed the problem of anti-social behaviour. It was held Saturday 26 January 2008 and commenced at 2.00 p.m. in The Strand Hotel, Omeath, Co Louth. It was facilitated by Archbishop Michael Desmond Hynes OMD PhD. The seven previous annual workshops were facilitated by Sean Crudden.
The ninth workshop (24 January 2009) had the theme of "Bulllying." Archbishop Hynes was the facilator assisted by Signor Seán Crudden BSc H Dip in Ed.
The tenth annual winter workshop was an outstanding success facilitated in expert fashion by Archbishop Michael Desmond Hynes OMD PhD on Saturday 23 January 2010. It dealt with the theme "Back to Basics - A Plan for Survival." CEHG is awfully grateful to Louth County Enterprise Board which gave a generous grant to the group, to help with the running of this worskhop, as it has done in previous years.
It looks as if next year's workshop will start on Saturday 29 January 2011 at 14.00 in The Strand Hotel, Omeath, Co Louth, Ireland. Theme: "Obesity."
Writing on 12 October 2011 I can tell you that our workshop 2011 was our best ever but most of us have not lost any weight since! At the workshop in January last we decided that the theme for winter workshop 2012 would be "Suicide Prevention." It appears at this stage as if the workshop, the twelfth in a series begun at the start of the millennium, will take place on Saturday 28 January 2012, starting at 14.00 in The Strand, Omeath. You may be able to find other details in our "latest meeting" page.
